Strobing: The Makeup Trend You Need to Try
Strobing is one of my favorite makeup trends right now. It allows you to have that slightly sculpted look, but with a healthy, natural glow at the same time.
I’m sure your first question right now is along the lines of “what the heck is ‘strobing?’”
Well, it’s pretty simple actually. If you think about the word strobe, you probably think about light, right? So it would only make sense that “strobing” is a technique that requires light. More specifically, strobing plays with highlighting and illuminating.
Strobing is basically a really, really simple way of contouring—which is almost impossible to mess up. Why? Because you don’t use any dark colors; you only use highlighter and illuminizer. In addition, since strobing deals with mainly highlighting the face, it’s perfect for those of us who are starting to dip into the colder, less sunny months of the year (which we’re usually paler in).
With strobing, the key is to highlight the points of your face that light would naturally hit—the forehead, tops of cheekbones, Cupid’s bow, bridge of nose, and the tip of the chin. Personally, when I strobe, I like to do my brow bone as well, just to make my eyeshadow appear more blended and part of the “look.”
There are a few ways to strobe. If you want to have a very intense strobing look, highlight the areas I just previously mentioned with concealer/powder/whatever you typically use to highlight, and then top it off with illuminizer. On a day-to-day basis, I usually just conceal my under eyes (I always have dark circles), apply the illuminizer to those key points, and call it a day. However, it’s all about what you prefer.
Some of my favorite illuminizers are:
So ladies (and gentlemen?), if you want to have that look of your highlight being "on fleek," strobing is the way to go. Make sure your skin looks glowy and fresh this fall/winter, not matte and dull!
